Richard practises primarily in commercial, civil and administrative law, including class actions and inquiries.

His recent matters include acting for a party in the Manus Island detaineee class action; the State of Victoria with respect to Aboriginal youths in detention and for a law firm in defence of a breach of confidence claim.  His current matters include acting in an industrial matter in the Federal Court; a defamation matter in the Victorian Supreme Court and a restraint matter also in the Victorian Supreme Court.

He recently acted for the Auditor General with respect to an inquiry by a Parliamentary Committee with respect to his conduct.  Richard also acted on behalf of the State of Victoria with respect to the reopened Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry.

Richard has been briefed in a number of large class actions, including for the plaintiff in the Murrindindi bushfire class action (Rowe v AusNet & Ors [2015] VSC 232); a defendant in the Bonsoy class action (Downie v Spiral Foods & Ors [2015] VSC 190); the plaintiff in the abalone class action (Regent Holdings Pty Ltd v State of Victoria [2013] VSC 601) and currently McPherson & Kelly in the Willmott class action.

Richard has also appeared before the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse.

He also appeared for the Melbourne City Council with respect to the Occupy Melbourne protests (Kerrison v Melbourne City Council & Ors (2014) 314 ALR 241).  This concerned issues of administrative and constitutional law.
