I am a dispute resolution lawyer with over 25 years’ experience including roles as:

  • an in-house lawyer with ANZ Banking Group Limited
  • a Federal Court registrar
  • a nationally accredited mediator (holding advanced accreditation at the Victorian Bar) acting as mediator in over 1200 mediations
  • a barrister (1994-1998, and 2007-present)
  • a solicitor in private practice.

I practise at the Victorian Bar as a commercial litigator and mediator working across a wide range of jurisdictions, including interlocutory, trial and appellate matters, demonstrating a sound knowledge of law and procedure.  I am briefed by a broad range of clients including government bodies, individuals, corporations, financial institutions, company liquidators and trustees.  My advocacy style is clear, effective and concise.

As a mediator I have an engaging manner and am persistent, patient and thorough, achieving high settlement rates.  My broad range of professional experience enables me to identify the real issues in a case quickly, which in turn enables me to assist parties to engage in negotiations expeditiously.

At the ANZ Banking Group Limited I was a senior member of the Bank’s dispute resolution group, which had responsibility for all of the Bank’s non-lending related litigation.  In this role, I also had responsibility as Special Counsel, India, for the conduct of significant off-shore litigation.

As a Federal Court registrar I acted as a decision maker exercising delegated judicial powers, and also as a mediator with responsibility for mediating cases across all areas of the Court’s jurisdiction.  At the Federal Court I also held senior executive roles with responsibility for leading its team of Victorian registrars together with other management responsibilities.

A sample of recent cases in which I have appeared include:

  • Davis v ABL Nominees Pty Ltd & Anor [2014] FCCA 2069 (acting for a bankruptcy trustee)
  • Guss v Deputy Commissioner of Taxation [2015] FCA 841 (acting for the ATO)
  • Finlayson v Indigenous Business Australia [2014] VSCA 95 (acting for IBA)
  • Cetinkaya v Official Trustee in Bankruptcy [2012] FCA 611 (acting for the Official Trustee)
  • Deputy Commissioner of Taxation v Compumark Pty Ltd [2012] FCA 583 (acting for the ATO).
